Wireless Networking

One of the hottest developments in networking is the growing installed base of wireless networks at the office and in the home. It’s become easier and easier to share high-speed internet access and costs have continued to drop. There are a number of wireless “protocols” available, at different speeds and at different costs.  We recommend installing equipment that adheres to the latest protocol, 802.11g.  It’s FAST, affordable, and reliable.

Why have a wireless network?

A wireless network will allow you to “plug” your laptop computer into a wireless internet connection any place at your office or at home. Just install a wireless network card in your laptop and run your internet connection through a router with wireless capabilities. Then you can actually log into your network with a laptop, without a cable connection.  You can also install wireless network cards in desktop computers so they don’t need cables to connect to the network. So, all the computers in your office or at home can communicate, share files if desired, and shared a high-speed internet connection. Many routers are designed with both wireless and cabled options so your network can consist of computers with both types of network connections.

There are security issues related to using a wireless network. Read this article to learn more about these issues and how to prevent problems. We typically recommend and use LinkSys products.
